Broad Definition of Literacy

The concept of literacy has evolved from a narrow definition to a broader view as the world has become more complex. Where once literacy was thought of as encompassing only reading and writing, we now accept that there are many literacy's; literacy is an essential cultural, social, and academic practise that not only involves reading and writing, but also includes a variety of abilities such as viewing and representing. Literacy's enable us to communicate, represent and evaluate knowledge in multiple ways. The more literacy's we learn, the greater our understanding of the world. Lieracy learning develops on a continuum - it is a lifelong and life-wide experience.
